ActivArte

pres nycAt the Municipal Theater of San Clemente, a small town in Chile’s rural Maule Region, I facilitated a year-long workshop called ActivArte, from March to November 2014, engaging adolescent girls from remote areas in a drama-based exchange with a peer group from the The Other Side project in New York City. Both groups of girls recorded skits dramatising relevant themes in their lives, with the aim of identifying and overcoming patriarchal oppression and comparing their perspectives on the role of women in New York versus Chile. The resulting intercultural dialogue generated an awareness of the world beyond their communities and a positive self-image for these girls, empowering future female leaders who value and respect their own voices.
